Hunger Games!!

Statutory Warning: This post is not for Hollywood movie lovers.

My first encounter with Hollywood movies was in the summer holidays of the early 90s. A VCR was rented and movies were played round the clock. Mama introduced us to Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon", "Mackenna's Gold" and "Gods must be Crazy". I can count the Hollywood action movies I have watched on my finger tips. We girls bunked college one day to watch Anaconda. I can write an entire post on it. MI- II with a bunch of guys, a decade back. All I can remember about the movie was Tom Cruise. He's handsome. Ain't he? The others with my sonny. Iron Man - 2 for a Mother's day which sucked the iron out of me. Avengers which turned out to be Revengers. Let me not digress.

I who hardly watch TV, who rarely watch Hollywood movies, have been lured by my dearest BIL to watch a movie called 'The Hunger Games'. I asked, is it an action movie? Basically, I don't enjoy action movies. I love drama. Call me a drama queen. He says, yeah didi, it is, but it will be nice. Okay. I thought why don't I try. Being the impatient being I am, I bombard them with questions and get a gist of what the movie is about.

For those of you who haven't watched it, here it is in brief. The movie is shot into the future where there is a reality show. Two participants are picked from the existing 13 districts and they are supposed to kill each other in order to survive as the winner. First thing first, I HATE reality shows. If you ask me why, I really don't know why. I just don't like them. I never watch them. Period!!

Second thing, what kind of a show is it where you kill each other? To emerge as a winner? What are we trying to prove here? The writer and director artistically projects it as surviving rather than brutally saying, killing. The concept irked me to no end. Come on now, it's a movie....relax girl! Yes, I need to grow. And yes, I still belong to the old school.

However, I manage to finish the movie amidst texting on Whatsap, reading the sub-titles, (Yes, I need sub-titles for English movies).

Ufff!!! Human brain is turning psychopathic by day. And you call it, Science Fiction!!!!

P.S: I have written this post in between mood swings and completed it force-ably in order not to go into the writer's block everyone talks of. Thank you for bearing my rant if you have come to the end :D

  4. reality shows are meant for people whose emotions are not real.i don't watch reality shows coz am real human.i din't watch hunger games after watching trailer coz i felt it was boring.we can read a movie from its trailer.

am a movie freak,am fond of animation movies, adventure and genuine sci-fi movies.movies like wall-e,man of steel(super man) brings you emotions and power of self-belief to the core.

in the end, this world is all about survival of fittest.i want to ask you something,so you are never selfish, jealous ,greed in your entire life for your lil comfort?

    1. Welcome here Shiva. I am not against movies or action movies for that matter. I do enjoy some of them..not these sci-fiction movies..
That's a very self thought provoking question, Shiva. I'm not a saint to not be selfish, jealous or greedy. There were and there would be many times in the past an future when I would behave with those qualities. At the same time, I wouldn't be selfish or greedy for lil comforts. I try my best to restrain myself from them :)

  5. Agree with Renu... Luck is the Hindi movie which is similar to Hunger Games. I had seen another movie in which convicts had to kill each other and bets were placed on them. Even Death Race series is also based on this theme.
I am a passive TV watcher... as the remote is in the hands of you-know-who and he watches only Hollywood movies so have heard/partly seen almost all English movies shown on TV a 2 dozen times!

  8. I can't say much, as I don't watch realty shows or movies based on them. I don't mind some of the action movies, but I am not a great fan of them. I like comedies and romantic movies, language no bar. BTW go and see Hachiko, you will love it, and would not mind seeing it again and again it is so good. And Sleepless in Seattle, Serendipity they are movies, i never get tired of watching whenever it is shown on TV, these are old movies but still they are gems.

  10. Hi FIF

Its actually based on a book series. The books are good, I have read the entire trilogy. Actually the story does not encourage reality shows or anything. Guess you missed the intro part. There is some uprising in which the districts raise against the ruling Capitol. The villainous preseident puts it down but as a kind of punishment devises this concept of Hunger Games where two chosen teenagers from each district will have to compete in the games. Its actually like a forced thing on them. Do read the books if you get a chance!

    1. Yes, Jaish. My sis also told me the same. It is based on a series of books. Even after you explained me the intro part, I have no liking for it :) After watching the movie, I wouldn't read the book. Thank you for the recommendation, though!

    2. :) I did the reverse, read the books first and then watched the movie. Had I seen the movie first maybe I would have reacted similarly! :D Actually they have planned movies for the remaining books as well :)

    3. Haan...I also heard the same...that they are going to make the other books into movies..may the lord save the audience :P Hey, btw, can I have your email id? I didn't find it in your blog?

  15. A movie where people are killing each other in the name of a reality show?! That is a bizarre concept, I am not sure if I would be able to sit through it too.

  16. I have seen this book at home and my daughter reading it. I have never felt inclined to try it because of the name. Now that I have read your review, I don't think I will read it coz I have reality shows too and I don't like the idea of participants killing each other either!
