Cabbage Chutney

Hmm…not sure how many of you are cabbage fans. I am not either. But, I am still okay with it. This one however is my mom’s own recipe which she makes in like 5 mins. And it tastes yummy and crunchy with hot rice. All you need is:

Cabbage – ¼ or ½ depending on the quantity you want
Green chilies – 4 to 5 again depending on the spice you want
Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
Tamarind paste – ½ tsp
Salt – Adjust to taste

For the seasoning:

Oil – 3 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Chana dal (Split peas) – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Curry leaves - few

  • Dice or shred the cabbage into small pieces.
  • Grind the green chilies with the cumin seeds.
  • Then add the tamarind paste and salt and swish the blender once.
  • Next add a bunch of the diced cabbage into the blender and blend for a few seconds.
  • Then add this ground paste to the rest of the cabbage pieces and mix well.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, once they start to splutter add cumin and rest of the ingredients. Switch off the stove and add the seasoning to the cabbage.
  • Garnish with chopped or ground coriander leaves.
Serve it with hot rice and ghee..Yummm..It may look that the cabbage sounds too raw..isn't it? But, no. It's just fine. You don't feel it's uncooked or smells raw.Cutting the cabbage is the only thing that takes time. And for cutting the cabbage, the best tool is the food processor.
